I launched Billy Goat in 2005, but my connection to masonry runs much deeper. Growing up in the Adelaide Hills in an old stone cottage that my father restored, I watched him build everything from scratch – big stone gable ends, recycled red bricks, materials sourced from a small local quarry. Even as a teenager, I was fascinated by how traditional building methods could create something lasting and beautiful.

What started as helping dad with basic building techniques evolved into my trade when I struck out on my own in my early twenties. Initially, I felt a bit out of my depth, but as more work came in, I gained confidence and started bringing mates into projects. For fifteen busy years, I managed large crews and took on major masonry requirements across the South Coast, but eventually realized my true passion lay elsewhere.

I wanted to get back to where I started – working with a smaller crew, focusing on the craftsmanship and building close relationships with builders and clients. There’s something special about problem solving, teaching, and supporting each other while creating something beautiful. Having a laugh while doing what you love – that’s the best part.

The work I’m drawn to now varies in scale, materials, and technique. From blending stone recovered from old ruins with quarried materials for new chimneys, to creating feature walls using stones harvested directly from building sites – each project tells its own story. I love that masonry combines traditional hand tools that haven’t changed in centuries with the creation of architectural features that will outlast us all.

The Billy Goat name? It reflects the sure-footed, determined approach needed for quality stonework. Like our namesake, we’re comfortable on challenging terrain, persistent in solving complex problems, and we don’t follow the herd when it comes to solutions. Every project gets the same careful attention, whether it’s restoring a heritage cottage or creating a modern feature wall that becomes the talking point of the home.

After what feels like a lifetime in the trade, I’ve learned that the most rewarding projects happen when traditional craftsmanship meets genuine collaboration with clients who appreciate the art of stonework.
